Deep within the cliffs of Oji Inari Shrine lies a cave known as "Kitsune-ana" (Fox Hole), as shown in the photo.
@Legend says that the supreme commander of the foxes serving the Inari deities of the Kanto region resides there.
@Furthermore, this cave also appears in a rakugo (traditional Japanese comic storytelling) performance, where it's said to have been inhabited by a mother fox who tried to deceive humans but was instead deceived herself, along with her offspring.
@What connection does this "deceived fox" have to the "supreme commander"?

ͺ It's actually a power spot that's said to bring good fortune.
ͺThis is a giant ema (votive tablet) at Oji Inari Shrine that is "only on display during the first three days of the New Year and on Hatsuumai (the first day of the Horse in the lunar calendar)." It depicts Ibaraki-doji, who, after having his arm cut off by Watanabe no Tsuna, a hero of the Heian period, retrieved it by transforming into a woman.
One day, a fox disguised as a beautiful woman lured a man into a restaurant called "Ogiya" to deceive him. However, the man realized she was a fox and, in an attempt to trick her, ate and drank heavily, telling the waiter, "That woman will pay," before leaving. Unable to pay, the woman was questioned by the staff, her true identity as a fox was revealed, and she was punished before fleeing back to her fox den.
@That's the gist of the story.
@And the amazing thing is, this restaurant, "Ogiya," still exists today (though they no longer offer private dining, only selling tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) for takeout)!
@The tamagoyaki from Ogiya, which even the fox loved, is "thick and mellow in flavor," perfect as a side dish with rice or as a snack with drinks!
According to legend, "Every year on New Year's Eve, the fox messengers of the Inari deities of the Kanto region come to pay their respects to the fox general residing in Oji." The story goes that after their long journey, the foxes first stop at "Shozoku Inari" to prepare themselves before going to pay their respects to the general residing at "Oji Inari Shrine."
@And an event mimicking this takes place every year on New Year's Eve!
@The sight of people wearing "Oji-style fox makeup" and "fox costumes" gathering at "Shozoku Inari" late at night and walking in a procession to "Oji Inari Shrine" is truly breathtaking!
Shozoku Inari Shrine: This is a sacred place where the Inari deities of the Kanto region prepare their attire before visiting Oji Inari Shrine on New Year's Eve. It's also the meeting place for the "Oji Fox Procession Event"!
