【Yokai & Mystery】 The big raccoon dog .VS. Bishamonten / Tamonji Temple (Tokyo pref.)
Tamonji Temple, located in Kanegafuchi between the Sumida River and the Arakawa River, has the nickname "Tanuki-dera" (Tanuki Temple), and it seems that this is based on the legend of a giant tanuki (raccoon dog) that was defeated by a messenger of Bishamonten (Vaisravana).
I got a glimpse of the connection between Bishamonten and tanuki, and it was a truly enjoyable stroll.

Originally, this temple was apparently called Daikyozan Myooin Sumida-dera, with Fudo Myoo as its principal deity. However, during the Tensho era, the principal deity was changed to Bishamonten, and the name was changed to Tamon-ji.
At that time, in order to make it easier for worshippers, the surrounding woods were cut down and the land leveled. As a result, a large tanuki (raccoon dog) whose habitat had been taken away retaliated by transforming into a giant ogre and causing the earth to shake and rain down earth and sand.
Then, Zennis Tend?, a messenger of Bishamonten, appeared and defeated the tanuki.
The next day, the head priest, who found the carcasses of a male and female tanuki, took pity on them and built a mound, which is said to be the "Tanuki Mound" shown in the photo below.
