【Town & Gourmet】 Stick Conger Eel (Akita pref.)

A mysterious creature called "BouAnago (Stick Conger Eel)" inhabits the waters off the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture.

"BouAnago" is a slimy, cylindrical creature that looks like an alien from space, and it seems to live on the seabed at depths of about 100 meters.

Catching "BouAnago" requires advanced technology and immense physical strength. Therefore, currently, there is only one ship in Japan capable of catching "BouAnago," and it seems that fishing is only possible once a week.

But the taste is absolutely amazing!

Perfectly roasted whole "BouAnago" dried fish boasts a crispy skin, and with each bite, a juicy, flavorful taste fills your mouth. It truly deserves to be called the king of sake accompaniments!

It's like savoring the bounty of the sea in its entirety, and it pairs exceptionally well with warm sake.

And it's reasonably priced! The one pictured above costs only 400 yen.

For "BouAnago," we recommend sake with a strong rice flavor. Ideally, it should be served warm. (Nihedon @ KesaranPasaran Lab)

The name "BouAnago" might lead one to believe it's a type of "Anago (Conger Eel)," but upon investigation, it appears that "BouAnago" is not an "Anago" but rather a species called "NutaUnagi."

And while "NutaUnagi" might seem like a type of "Unagi (Eel)," that's also incorrect. "NutaUnagi" is not an "Unagi," but rather a very primitive creature scientifically known as an "agnatha," a vertebrate that apparently lacks a skeleton.

It has no teeth and feeds on the carcasses of fish and shellfish, slurping and sucking them into its body. So, it might actually be an "alien species from outer space."

"BouAnago" was being sold at a roadside station in Akita Prefecture.
